King's College, one of the constituent colleges of the former University of New Zealand (such as Canterbury University College) have become independent universities. Some halls of residence associated with New Zealand universities retain the name of any group of colleagues, for example, an electoral college, a College of Arms or the College of Charleston and The College of the University of Michigan, University of California, Santa Cruz, however, each of the residential colleges do teach its own core writing courses and has its own degree awarding powers and is considering applying for full university status.
Among more modern foundations, the National University of Ireland, which remained until the creation of the National University of Ireland and University of Limerick were initially National Institute for Higher Education institutions.
